Sore Throat and Tonsillitis in Children

Information for Parents and Carers

What is a sore throat or tonsillitis?

Sore throats and tonsillitis are very common in children. Most are caused by viruses and
improve on their own within a few days.

Common symptoms

  • Sore throat
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Fever
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Reduced appetite
  • Tiredness

How to help your child at home

  • Encourage plenty of fluids
  • Offer soft foods if swallowing is painful
  • Use paracetamol or ibuprofen if needed (follow packet instructions)
  • Ensure your child gets rest

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are not always needed because many sore throats are caused by viruses. If  antibiotics are prescribed, give them exactly as directed and complete the course.

When to seek urgent medical advice

Seek urgent medical help if your child:

  • Has difficulty breathing
  • Is unable to swallow fluids
  • Is very drowsy or difficult to wake
  • Develops a rash that does not fade when pressed
  • Has worsening symptoms or severe dehydration

Pharmacy First

Children aged 5 years and over with uncomplicated sore throat symptoms may sometimes  be assessed and treated by a community pharmacist under the NHS Pharmacy First service.
